Employee Housing

Shantytown is the exclusive housing complex for our three companies. It is located in Healy, Alaska within walking distance of all the local businesses.

Facilities

Employee Cabins

Residents will share a cabin with one or two other coworkers. They are small wood-framed cabins that provide solid shelter, electric heat, lights, outlets, and a full-size refrigerator. There is no running water in the cabins. Most cabins contain twin-size bunk beds that can be stacked or separated. We have a few full-size beds available for couples. We do not provide sheets, blankets, pillows, or other home-living items. There is limited storage in the cabins so we suggest bringing no more than two bags. Each cabin is unique and most are decorated with art from previous employees.

Main House

The shared main house at the center of Shantytown offers a place to cook, dine, and socialize. It is within 40 yards of the farthest employee cabin. The kitchen is equipped with a microwave, three-compartment sink, prep table, gas ovens with stove top, and an outdoor propane grill. There is a collection of tableware, pots, pans, and cooking utensils left by previous employees. Residents are welcome to use these items, however, we will not replace them. We provide paper towels, dish soap, sponges, trash bags, and some cleaning supplies. Food and other supplies are not included. There is a dining area with a large table, chairs, futon, and tv. The tv can connect to various streaming services.

Bathrooms

There are five bathrooms available. Four of them have showers. We provide toilet paper, hand soap, and some cleaning supplies.

Internet

WiFi is included with housing. The best signal is in the main house. Everyone shares a 100 mbps connection and it will lag when too many users are streaming. There is strong 4G cell phone service available through AT&T and Verizon networks.

Laundry

There are two sets of complimentary laundry machines available on the property.

Policies

Deposit

There is no upfront deposit required. Any damages will be deducted from the responsible employee’s pay and/or bonus.

Housing Fee

Housing fees will be discussed during the interview. The fee is automatically deducted from paychecks. It includes access to all of the facilities and supplies described on this page as well as transportation on our work shuttles.

Work Requirements

All residents are required to work full-time at our company/s and have open availability. Residents who choose to work multiple jobs will need to have their other employers work around our schedule.

Respect

The camp must remain a friendly and safe living environment. Theft, vandalism, violence, harassment, and any similar toxic behavior is strictly prohibited. A diverse group of genders, orientations, ethnicities, cultures, and personalities will be living at our camp. Residents are expected to respect the space and individuality of all other residents.

Drug Use

Our housing is a drug-free environment. Illegal drug use is strictly prohibited. Alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana are permitted, however smoking indoors is prohibited. We reserve the right to ban specific employees from consuming alcohol on our property if their intoxicated behavior is disturbing other residents.

Cleaning

Employees are required to work together and keep the main house, bathrooms, outdoor areas, and cabins clean. Each resident’s dishes need to be cleaned before they leave the kitchen. Dirty dishes and other abandoned messes in the common areas will be thrown in the trash. Abandoned personal items will be put in the lost and found. We assign unpaid cleaning of each common area twice per week. We will put everyone’s name in a hat, pull names to assign rooms, and restart once every name has been pulled.

Guests

All guests must be approved by management. Overnight guests are allowed to stay in the hosting employee’s cabin with approval from their cabin mate. The hosting employee will be charged $20/night from their payroll. Employees will be held personally responsible for their guest’s policy violations and damages.

Noise Control

Residents are expected to keep noise at a level that does not disturb other residents or neighbors. The employee housing is directly next to Denali TriValley Cabins and we absolutely can not disturb their guests. All indoor and outdoor activities must remain reasonably quiet throughout the day and very quiet from 10 pm to 8 am. Residents should immediately comply if anyone asks them to quiet down.

Fire

Fires are not permitted. This includes candles, campfires, camp stoves, charcoal grills, fireworks, and all other forms of fire.

Pets

Pets are not allowed on the property. A $25/day fee will be charged to any resident who brings a pet onto the property.

Termination

Employees who cause problems at housing or work will lose both their job and housing. This is an Employee Housing program and does not fall under the standard tenant/landlord laws. Terminated employees will only be given two hours to vacate the property. We will provide transportation to the shuttle or train stop for employees who depart peacefully. Employees who follow our policies, respect others, and fulfill their work duties will be more than welcome to complete the season with us.

Getting to Denali

Employees are responsible for funding and organizing their own transportation to and from Denali for the season. The cheapest and fastest option is to fly into the closest major airport in Fairbanks (FAI) or Anchorage (ANC). The only dependable transportation from the airports to Denali National Park is the Alaska Railroad. These tickets should be booked through us for a 50% discount. Each route only operates one day per week at the beginning and end of the season so you should plan ahead by searching available routes at alaskarailroad.com.
